Planning Graduate Programme

On entry to the programme you will be assigned to a business group and then complete a two-year rotational placement across Auckland City Council divisions. This rotational programme includes a 12 month placement within City Development, (six months with Auckland City Environments, six months with City Planning) and four months within Pae Herenga Tangata and will enable you to become involved in current city-wide projects. The remainder of the programme will be centred around two, four-month elective rotational placements to provide you with further opportunity and experience within the planning field.

Elective placements will be agreed based on your interests, development requirements and to maximise potential learning opportunities. Elective placements will be within two of the following groups: Art Community and Recreation Policy, Urban Design, Property, CBD Projects, Transport Strategy.


Auckland City Environments (ACE)

From a public good perspective, Auckland City Environments reduces risks to the environment by ensuring people comply with relevant environmental policies and rules. More information

City Planning

City Planning develops and promotes a planning strategy for Auckland city consistent with resource management requirements and incorporates international best practice on city development and environmental planning.

Pae Herenga Tangata

Pae Herenga Tangata is a specialist team, responsible for directing the organisation's approach and perspective on all things Maori. We are here to help Auckland City Council build its capacity to work with Maori and we do this by developing processes, advising on strategic policy and implementing bicultural training and development for staff. More information

Arts, Community and Recreation Policy (ACR Policy)

ACR Policy develops and reviews strategies, policies, plans and project initiatives for the city’s open spaces, parks and streets; community and recreation facilities; and art, social and community policies. Our emphasis is on the policy and planning aspects of arts, community and recreation outcomes. More information

Urban Design

Urban Design aims to help transform and revitalise Auckland into an internationally successful city with a distinctly Auckland flavour. Urban Design aims to help the city put people first and be a city that is recognised for its approach and commitment to high quality urban design. More information

Property

Property operates within the Finance division of Auckland City Council to ensure that development in the city is sustainable and caters for population growth while ensuring high quality urban design.
Supported by the Property Enterprise Board, Property focuses on leading property management and property development activities by delivering successful projects to the city that fulfil the 'Development with Vision' policy. More information

CBD Projects

CBD Projects focuses on specific projects in support of ‘Auckland's CBD Into the Future’ strategy and action plans. There are six teams in the group:

  • CBD portfolio team
  • Aotea Quarter programme
  • Arts, Community and Recreation programme
  • City Development programme
  • Streetscapes programme
  • Transport programme.

Transport Strategy

Transport Strategy sits within the Transport division of Auckland City Council and manages the development of strategies and policies that meet the transport needs of the city. The group also designs and project manages major transport initiatives in conjunction with other regional and national bodies.
The group focuses on developing sustainable transport for Auckland city, encompassing vehicular transport, public transport, cycling and walking. This includes travel demand management such as parking, cycling and walking policy, major roading policy, project delivery and passenger transport initiatives. More information
